Charcoal.
Hard, high-purity coconut-shell charcoal processed into uniform granule sizes — the essential raw material for coconut-shell activated carbon production, exported internationally since 1981.
The foundation of
activated carbon.
Granulated coconut-shell charcoal is produced by carbonizing coconut shells at high temperatures, then processing the resulting charcoal into uniform granule sizes. The result is a hard, dense carbon material with high fixed carbon content and low ash levels.
It is the primary raw material used in the production of coconut-shell activated carbon — and one of BFI's core export products since 1981, when the company began shipping granulated charcoal to Japan.

Activated Carbon Feedstock
Granulated coconut-shell charcoal is the primary raw material for producing coconut-shell activated carbon. Its hardness, purity, and consistent structure make it the preferred feedstock for activation processes.
- Primary raw material for activated carbon
- Hard, dense structure survives activation
- Consistent granule size for uniform activation
- Low ash content for high-purity carbon
Why coconut-shell charcoal?
Hard & dense structure
Coconut-shell charcoal is significantly harder than wood-based charcoal, resulting in lower fines generation during handling and processing.
High fixed carbon
Coconut-shell charcoal has a high fixed carbon content, making it an efficient raw material for activated carbon production and industrial carbon applications.
Low ash content
The naturally low ash content of coconut-shell charcoal contributes to the high purity of the activated carbon produced from it.
Renewable source
Produced from coconut shells — an agricultural by-product — making productive use of a material that would otherwise go to waste.
Exporting since 1981.
BFI began exporting granulated coconut-shell charcoal to Japan in 1981 — making it one of the company's longest-running export products. This established BFI's presence in the international charcoal and carbon market and laid the groundwork for its later expansion into activated carbon.
